From research to business

The tech­no­lo­gi­cal princi­ples for Indus­tri­al Data Space are being deve­lo­ped in the con­text of rese­arch. Cur­r­ent­ly the Indus­tri­al Data Space rese­arch pro­ject being car­ri­ed out at the Fraun­ho­fer-Gesell­schaft is of key impor­t­an­ce. The pre-com­pe­ti­ti­on pro­ject is fun­ded by the Federal Minis­try of Edu­ca­ti­on and Rese­arch (BMBF). It star­ted on 1 Octo­ber 2015 and runs for three years.

In total, the­re are 12 Fraun­ho­fer Insti­tu­tes taking part in the work.

The dif­fe­rent parts of the work being car­ri­ed out in the pro­ject are clo­se­ly lin­ked with each other and are ali­gned to the Indus­try 4.0. Par­ti­ci­pants in the rese­arch pro­ject are also invol­ved in the working groups of the plat­form. This work is hea­ded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Boris Otto. Wit­hin the con­text of the Indus­tri­al Data Space rese­arch pro­ject the Fraun­ho­fer-Gesell­schaft is working on the fol­lo­wing main objec­tives:
  • Desi­gning and describ­ing a refe­rence archi­tec­tu­re model for Indus­tri­al Data Space. The refe­rence archi­tec­tu­re model not only descri­bes the tech­ni­cal soft­ware basis of the Indus­tri­al Data Space as a con­cep­tu­al model but also the necessa­ry pro­tec­tion, gover­nan­ce, coope­ra­ti­on and con­trol mecha­nisms to ensu­re data is pro­ces­sed and exch­an­ged secu­re­ly.
  • Pro­to­ty­pi­cal imple­men­ta­ti­on of the frame­work archi­tec­tu­re in selec­ted use cases
  • Desi­gning and con­ti­nuing a “stan­dar­di­sa­ti­on road­map”
  • Desi­gning the busi­ness model for the sta­ke­hol­ders in Indus­tri­al Data Space
  • Desi­gning the cer­ti­fi­ca­ti­on con­cept and a busi­ness model for the Indus­tri­al Data Space cer­ti­fi­ca­ti­on aut­ho­ri­ty
  • Deve­lo­ping a method for the Indus­tri­al Data Space users to trans­form busi­ness stra­te­gies accord­ing to the new requi­re­ments on digi­ta­li­sa­ti­on
  • Deri­ving recom­men­da­ti­ons for action for the ope­ra­ti­on of Indus­tri­al Data Space and iden­ti­fy­ing new rese­arch fields for the sustainab­le deve­lop­ment of Indus­tri­al Data Space

The rese­arch pro­ject is divi­ded into the fol­lo­wing working packa­ges: refe­rence archi­tec­tu­re model, soft­ware pilo­ting, use cases, stan­dar­di­sa­ti­on con­tri­bu­ti­ons, cer­ti­fi­ca­ti­on con­cept, busi­ness model inno­va­ti­on, recom­men­da­ti­ons for action, insti­tu­tio­na­li­sa­ti­on and pro­ject manage­ment.

  • 30.06.2016 Pre­sen­ta­ti­on of the spe­ci­fi­ca­ti­on docu­ments for the inter­faces of the con­nec­tor com­pon­ents and the pro­vi­si­on of an app­li­ca­ti­on ske­le­ton
  • 31.08.2016 Pre­sen­ta­ti­on of the pro­to­ty­pe of the core con­tai­ner
  • Janu­a­ry 2017 Pre­sen­ta­ti­on of the first Bro­ker ver­si­on
  • 31.01.2017 Publi­ca­ti­on of the archi­tec­tu­re docu­ment
  • March 2017 Deve­lop­ment of the Trusted Con­nec­tor

Die Indus­tri­al Data Space Asso­cia­ti­on is clo­se­ly inte­gra­ted in the­se pro­ces­ses. Rese­arch results, e.g. soft­ware com­pon­ents etc., are regu­lar­ly made avail­ab­le to the mem­bers of the asso­cia­ti­on for vali­da­ti­on and fur­ther deve­lop­ment.

The ser­vices wit­hin the pre-com­pe­ti­ti­on BMBF pro­ject inclu­de:
  • Run­ning work­shops to spe­ci­fy use cases tog­e­ther with the com­pa­nies
  • Deve­lo­ping a pro­ject plan for the imple­men­ta­ti­on of a pilot
  • Accom­pany­ing imple­men­ta­ti­on
  • Imple­men­ting the core com­pon­ents for Indus­tri­al Data Space


In addi­ti­on to the pre-com­pe­ti­ti­on pro­ject, the Indus­tri­al Data Space Asso­cia­ti­on is taking care of the fol­lo­wing tasks:

  • Imple­men­ting the pilot at the com­pa­ny (in par­ti­cu­lar data pro­ces­sing)
  • Con­nec­ting the com­pa­ny to the Indus­tri­al Data Space

A blueprint for data space

The refe­rence archi­tec­tu­re model for the Indus­tri­al Data Space con­sists of four par­ti­al archi­tec­tures. It will pre­sent a blue­print for safe data exchan­ge and the effi­ci­ent com­bi­na­ti­on of data and can be con­fi­gu­red for each indi­vi­du­al case.

Business architecture

Inclu­des all con­cepts that are important from an eco­no­mic per­spec­tive, e.g. data gover­nan­ce, coope­ra­ti­ve data manage­ment.

Data and service architecture

Forms the tech­ni­cal func­tio­n­al core of the Indus­tri­al Data Space with app store, bro­kers and con­nec­tors

Software architecture

Descri­bes the imple­men­ta­ti­on of the data and ser­vice archi­tec­tu­re of the Indus­tri­al Data Space.

Security architecture

Con­tains dif­fe­rent secu­ri­ty aspec­ts, e.g. inter­face secu­ri­ty, evi­dence of iden­ti­ty, data use moni­to­ring.

New standards for the digital economy

With their work on Indus­tri­al Data Space the sci­ence and busi­ness com­mu­nities are pur­suing the objec­tive of set­ting a new com­pre­hen­si­ve stan­dard for data eco­no­my. During the deve­lop­ment of the Indus­tri­al Data Space, exis­ting stan­dards are being used and fur­ther deve­lo­ped if necessa­ry.
